The purpose of the trade mission for the design sector was to commence relationship building with the Shandong Provincial Department of Urban and Rural Development and four key Design Institutes including:

  • Jinan Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (Group) Co Ltd;

  • Shandong Provincial Urban Construction Design Institute;

  • Shandong Provincial Architectural Design Institute;

  • Shandong Tong Yuan Design Group Co Ltd.

These meetings established possible business opportunities with three of the Design Institutes. In particular, Jinan Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (Group) Co Ltd indicated an interest in South Australian involvement in their water sensitive design pilot in Jinan (Sponge City). They are hoping to visit Adelaide in September to look at our showcases in this area.

Another big learning from the mission is the huge importance of Government in China. The delegation were reminded time and again that the presence of Megan Antcliff and Gavin Artz from the Department for State Development was a key 'door opener' for conversations. This experience highlights the importance of the Premier's commitment to annual two way economic development missions between ourselves and Shandong. A return delegation is expected in Adelaide in September to coincide with the Royal Show.
